I'm a CGA student working in a public CA firm, normal hours 8:30 to 5 monday to friday. During tax season (Feb, Mar, Apr) we work monday to saturday, same hours.

I have no problem as I understand this is the norm, but at our firm there is no extra compensation for the additional day per week for 3 months. I have heard of some friends in other firms who get either overtime pay, or the hours are banked and days are taken off in the slow season. (we are on salary and it remains the same)

I'd like to know if this is the most common practice, and if there are any rules concerning extra compensation ?

It depends. every firm is different. The legislation states clearly that they have to pay you overtime but some companies don't do that and since you are a student...I don't think they will.
You can always ask though
