I was wondering if your employer is legally permitted to oblige you to be available on Sundays to work. I live in Quebec where a few years ago, all stores were closed on Sundays because it was deemed a day to rest (originating from Christianity). However, later on that law was proved unconstitutional because the government cannot force non-Christian business owners to close down their stores on Sundays. I'm not sure, but I have heard that employers are therefore not allowed to require an employee to be available on sundays (it is his choice).
I work in a grocery store, and we do not have to be available on sundays. I will be changing jobs soon, moving on to a call center (also open on sundays). I want to know whether my new employer may or may not require me to be available on sundays.

Look at your contract agreement and ask your employer if you are required to working on Sundays when you are signing it.

Hi, check out that thread: http://www.jobforum.ca/showthread.php?t=289&highlight=overtime

It will clarify how the payment is calculated for overtime. Hourly employees who work more than 44 hours in a week are entitled to 1.5 times minimum wage.

I don't mind working on Sundays if it doesn't become a pattern and if they compensate me enough...

Compensation is the key for me. I work Sundays quite often but get double pay for it so I don't mind doing it. I just take a different day off.

In today's competitive world it is very hard to say NO. There is always someone hungrier than you who would be glad to work on Sundays. I would advise you to negotiate your payment terms before signing a contract so you could be on the safe side when you start (if you a willing to work on Sundays).

Well, I had trouble to find a job for quite a while. Now I work a lot over time and my job involves travel. It is not my dream job but at least is what I have studied for. I did some delivery jobs in the past before I found this one so I'm quite happy now. My point is, it depends on your overall situation. Some people would be happy to work on Sundays comparing not to work at all.

You are quite right Ivan.
I know people who deliver pizza for years and study at the same time. So you can imagine they will be happy to work overtime but just to work something they've studied for...

What are you working at the moment?
