I have been working as a web designer for some years now, but figure I should stop handing my work over to my boss, and start running my own business.

But I am worried I won't get enough clients.

Do you think the web design market is over saturated?

The web design market is definately saturated, but it's saturated with clients as well. Every website needs to be designed by somebody, and not everybody is good at designing them, or has the time for it. If you want to work for yourself you can bidd on jobs on freelance sites like elance, you can worl out arrangements with other companies that can provide you with work, like web hosts or programming/scripting businesses. You could also offer people sales comissions for finding clients.

Yes thats a good idea. I could run an affiliate type program which could bring in extra clients.

I figure not only do people need websites, but people also need their site updated etc often and most people dont have the skills or time to do this their self.

My target market right now is small business, though I may brand out a little more later.

Tim,

It's very good that you have chosen your target market.
Most web designers don't do that, and they target everything and everybody. This definitely doesn't help getting new business.
For example a real estate agent who needs a web site finds 2 web design companies, one of them with various themed sites in their portfolio, the other one dealing strictly with real estate sites. Chances are that the agent will choose the company specializing in real estate web sites.

Just make sure your niche is big enough :)

Also about targetting, dont just target on your local area, make it more specific.

Eg- real estate agents in your local area.
By becoming a real estate website specialist, you could get plenty of work from all the competing companies.

Another thing to consider when choosing your market niche is to look for an industry that has upside potential and where are money to be made. This will make your job much easier and your pay better :).

That's right ;)

No point targetting the local corner store who barely make enough to live on.

Targetting someone like car dealers, real estate etc is where the money is at.

Thanks guys!
Sounds like I need to start targetting more heavily than I am now.

Good news is that I've got some new clients this week!
I'm up late working on these new projects, but it's worth all the hard work :)

So many companies are outsourcing this sort of work to India and China these days.
I think this is what is making it even tougher for the standalone guys to get somewhere.

I'm sure it's possible, but I don't think I'd want to rely on it for permanent income.

I disagree. I think, if your good, you could make a good living at it. I would check out different webmaster forums as they usually have a marketplace where you can advertise and showcase your skills. Another idea would be to check out some of your local business' websites and market directly to them face to face. Go in with a laptop and show them some of your ideas. A face to face meeting is always good in my books.

Thanks for the ideas!
Thats good actually, i wonder if i designed a site for someone and went and showed them, there would be a good chance they would buy it?
I know this could be time consuming but it could be worth it.
