I am considering doing some photography for some supplemental income.

This would involve supplying photographs for local newspapers etc.

Is this a good idea, and could I make some decent money from it?

It really depends how many other people are already doing this in your area.
And if they newspapers hire amatuers to do this sort of thing for them.

Most papers and magazines already have in house photographers, but sending a sample of your work won't hurt.

I might send a sample of my portfolio.
I was thinking if I take photos of local happenings and people, at times when their own photographers aren't there, then they may take interest and generate new stories from my photos.

This is my hope anyway :)

Good luck, Tim. If you are passionate about photography, I would say do whatever it takes to get your business rolling. You may want to consider starting a website of your photos. You could sell your pics to people who want to use them for their websites and if you get a lot of traffic you could start selling advertising on your site.

Nice idea, thanks!
I wonder if this would work.. hmm

But couldn't people just steal the photos off my site?
How could I stop this from happening? I can't track everyone that is on my site and what they do with my photos :(

You can join istockphoto.com (http://istockphoto.com). This is a web site where you can publish your work and find potential clients.

A friend of mine set up her own web site and started doing wedding photography. She published her web site in various directories for wedding planners and her preces are fare and she got a pretty busy summer last year.

Just a thought

Wedding photography is not something you can just do though without alot of experience.
No one wants an amateur wedding photographer.
What if the photos dont turn out? Then you are in trouble.

Ok thanks for that
Do they pay me to give them my photos?
Doesnt that mean people can effectively steal my photos?

They pay you when your photo/illustration has been downloaded. The photos have a watermark all over them and you can't use them because this watermark is clearly visible. The photo is good only when you pay for it and has high resolution.

There are always going to be talentless bottomfeeders who will try to steal your content. There are a couple of things you can do. You can watermark your photos. You can also purchase software that will make it more difficult for people to steal your photos.

Catchlock (http://www.catchlock.com/)
Veripic (http://www.veripic.com/features/copyright.htm)

You will also have to be vigilant about using Google to search for unauthorized use of your photos and calling out the person who tried to steal them. All in all though, you can make a good living selling photos especially with the popularity of blogs.

I didn't know that such software existed. Cool
Is this "stamping" very expensive?

What kind of stamping do you mean?
I only know of watermarking.

Unfortunately in this industry I think if people want your photo, they will generally get it no matter what measures you take.:(
