It seems that every employer just expects us to work overtime these days, or we risk losing our job. Most of the time this overtime is unpaid, as we are on salary.

How do you feel about unpaid overtime?
Do you feel pressured to work overtime often?

I agree, whitey. They expect you to work overtime for 1 or 2 hours per day. I've worked in a small company before and at exactly 5 o'clock everybody were at the door, but this is an exception. I have a friend who's an auditor and it is normal for her to work 10 hours a day sometimes Saturdays too, It's horrible.

Sometimes I do, but not often and this is only if we have a deadline and I have to prepare everything and be ready on time. But I find it normal. Everybody has deadlines...

I rarely work overtime. Im confident I could get another job if I wanted to, so I refuse to push myself to my limits just to make the boss richer

I probably stay back once a month but thats all. casinomatrix.net (http://casinomatrix.net/)

That's one of the main reasons I do contracts only. I get paid for every hour I work. Of course my overtime hours are paid at the same rate as my regular hours, but this is better than not getting paid at all ;)

I only work hourly now. When I worked salary, my boss did expect me to work overtime but he claimed that I could leave early on the days when there wasn't a lot of work to do. Right. That rarely ever happened. One time I totaled all of the hours I worked vs. my salary and I was being paid something like $4.00 per hour. After that job I said never again.

These days the employers tend to abuse the simple rules of working etiquette. They prefer to push the employees to the limit and expect them to be happy and loyal. The employee should work hard and be concerned for the future of the company but need to have a personal live too. The truth is there always is another job waiting for you and the bosses should be more careful.

I refuse to work overtime.
I am out of work at 5pm on the dot, every single day.
We are not offered overtime or any incentive to work back, thankfully I am not bullied into it though :)

In the accounting business this is normal. They know that during the tax season they work without a break for at least 45 days.

Hi Lana,
This reminds me that the tax season is coming.
As for the accountants they get bonuses for working overtime, don't they?

I'm a contractor and some of my jobs are paid per hour and some are quoted. About half and half. The jobs where I'm paid hourly I charge 1.5x for overtime (weeknights and Saturdays), 2x for Sundays and 2.5x Holidays.

For quoted jobs I put a term in my quote that it is based on regular working hours (8-4 during the week) but I don't push this too much. In my business a lot of work is done on weekends, evenings, and holidays so I do the office portion at my leisure (usually during the week during the day) and then my installations happen typically on the weekend or holiday. I usually account for the "overtime" hours in my quote.

I end up working a lot of overtime, probably 60% of the weekends in any given year plus calls at all times of the night through the week. I can't complain though because I do get compensated for it.

P.S.
This past year I worked 3.5 months straight without a single day off, that's approximately 105 days. You think accounting has its busy times, well engineering has its share let me tell you. Longest shift ever worked: 27 hours (of course I'm only thinking with half a brain after about 18 hours). That week I clocked 108 hours on my time sheet, 40 regular hours and 68 overtime hours. I hope I never have to do that again!

If you work overtime they should pay you for that. Permanent employees usually get a bonus or something and the contract employees get paid 1.5 for every hour because they charge the company hourly.
Well if you a manager of a team it is expected to work overtime and not get paid for that but with a management position usually comes a better salary …
