When negotiating salary I'm not sure what to answer if they ask me about my salary history. What will be the best strategy? Do I tell the exact figure or exaggerate a little?

I would tell that I make the figure that I WANT to make!

Good tip Stephen! I think that the employers know that, this is part of the bargain. You just have to do be realistic in your expectations.

I don't think it is ethical to ask about your salary history. you can certanly discuss you future salary but i don't find it appropriate to talk about past rates.

If you are to give information, don't lie about it. But as you mentioned, it's a salary "negotiation," so trust yourself and negotiate. Tell them what you want, why you want it, and why they should give it to you.

Unless you show confidence and argue your case, they won't give it to you.

I would do some research on the salary rates for that job in your area. When they ask you, you can say well I know that the salaries for ____ are in this range and then outline your experiene and accomplishments to justify asking for more than the minimum for your area. That will also impress the employer that you are well researched. You may also want to discretly ask an HR person in the company what their salary range is like, so you can alos mention that and get a better idea of what is reasonable
