Thanks for the tips. I would love to be aware of how much I can do but tasks are piling up my desk all day long. In the morning I think I knew how much work has to be done but sometimes the amount is enormous... Maybe not every company is like mine but it is impossible to plan like that.

One more tip. If you call in sick always call your doctor. Your employer may want to see a doctor's note. This is what happened to me.

I find that really shortsighted. Try again in a month saying that this course will improve your performance ... isn't it obvious? Maybe they don't have budget right now, did you ask them if you can take the courses later?

Maybe they are happy with what you do without this training... Ask them in a month or so.

yes, let them know why training you to become Microsoft Certified will add value to the company (and be specific)

These tips are very helpful but they if they just don't have a budget you are out of job in a matter of minutes...
A friend of mine worked 3 years on a project with a team of 30 people and last week they canceled the project... They had to release the project in 3 months and after 3 years of hard work and millions spent they canceled it. So in a case like this it doesn't really matter what you do. :(

What if it has NOTHING to do with his job?

I would add a few more...

-don't make any enemies..be respectful at all times
-Get to know your boss, and the next level up...this is hard, but make an effort
-add value...the closer you are to producing revenue for a company, the less likely you will be cut
-be an innovator...suggest new ideas..put them down on paper and present them. Make sure they are well thought out. But don't be a pest.
-Don't gossip.
-Volunteer for extra work that gives you positive visibility

Here's what I've learned:

1. You cannot always do everything right, so do the "right" things.
2. People notice those who come to work early than who works overtime.
