Default Business License needed or Not?

I have searched high and low all over the internet and cannot find a definitive answer to my question. It is my hopes that some of you more knowledgeable individuals will have an idea. Here is my situation.

I am an affiliate marketer and promote products and services of others for commissions(such as clickbank, cj.com, etc...). I work out of my home and as an affiliate marketer I do not have nor store any product or have business traffic in my home. All my activities are done online. Do I need a business license as an affiliate marketer?

I started marketing a couple years back and have just been claiming all my income under my own name. I just recently went to the bank and the loan officer is unsure if I need a license or not. I always thought it was not necessary for this type of business. Anyone have any experience with this or any insight into some online resources I could examine which would address my question? It would be greatly Appreciated!

It would probably be a good idea to let you know that I am located in Alberta, Canada.

I don't know if you need a license or not. Maybe you should ask a lawyer...

It really depends on your situation. You don't need to register your business if you are a sole proprietor and using your legal name. For example "John Smith" instead of "Techie's Affiliate Marketing".

If you are charging and collecting provincial taxes you will need business license. If you use expemtions you still need to register. For example, in my business all my customers are PST exempt but I still need a provincial business license and have to file a quarterly statement in order for me to be exempt when buying goods for resale. This is what my Master Business License is for.

I would suggest you check with your province. I can't speak for the others but Ontario has a good website with all the information you need.

I work from home as well. I have a registered business number, gst.. ect. I would go on the Alberta Gov't site and check it out.

Here in BC it is attached to location. When I had businessfrom home nobody asked me for a license. When I rented an office I got a letter from Vancouver City Hall to pay for the license.

So, wait when they ask you. Do not harry to pay. They increase license fee each year.
