Default Contractor or Employee?

Hello,

I am a full-time employee (industrial mechanic) for a family member and was wondering if it would be possible to quit the job and get hired as a contractor (sole proprietorship) . This way I could have some tax deducts. 1 person has told me it is entirely possible. Another person told me I need more than 1 client to be a real business. Anyone have any tips for me? thanks!

Also, I have a website generating money (low income @$1000/year), and am looking at getting an investment property to generate money. If I need more than one client to be a business is there anyway I can group all these together as one company so it is legit (even though they are 3 unrelated things). Thanks again!
