Default 3 out of 5 years?

Hi, is it true that when you land in Canada you can leave for 2 years and when you come back you will not loose your status as Permanent Resident? So you have to be in Canada 3 years in 5 year period?

Actually you have to be present 2 years in 5 year period. You can land and not come back for 3 years and you will not loose your status as Permanent Resident. But if you want to get a passport you have to be in Canada 3 out of 4 years.
